What looks like just a branch of Roxy’s Grilled Cheese is also a portal to a magical world filled with arcade games and booze served in retro glasses. Enter this 21-plus Central Square bar (pronounced “a-four-cade”) at the back of Roxy’s.
“I remember the heyday of tens of thousands of monarchs at the Marin coast in the 1980s,” says Monroe, a Muir Woods park ranger and citizen scientist who has coordinated the overwinter counts of monarchs for three decades. “This year, we recorded a ‘near disappearance.’”
In Alberta, Canada, Shook Kelley redesigned a small, regional grocery chain now called Freson Bros. Fresh Market. In interviews, the team discovered that meat-smoking is a beloved pastime there, so Shook Kelley built huge, in-store smokers at each new location — a scene called “Banj’s Smokehouse” — that crank out pound after pound of the province’s signature beef, as well as elk, deer, and other kinds of meat (customers can even BYO meat to be smoked in-house). Kelley also designed stylized root cellars in each produce section, a cooler, darker corner of each store that nods to the technique Albertans use to keep vegetables fresh. These elements aren’t just novel ways to taste, touch, and buy. They reference cultural set points, triggering memories and personal associations. Kelley uses these open, aisle-less spaces, which he calls “perceptual rooms,” to draw customers through an implied sequence of actions, tempting them towards a specific purchase.
The most Willy Wonka–esque touch is the hulking piece of dairy processing equipment in a glass room by the cheese case. It’s a commercial-scale butter churner — the first one ever, Kettler told me, to grace the inside of a grocery store.

We can’t quite put our finger on it, but a Russian Communist-themed bar with red walls, deactivated bombs, and a pickle-back shot named for Vladimir Putin somehow feels of-the-moment. A terrific spot for a date, this kitschy place on the outskirts of Central Square serves classic cocktails and dozens of beers on tap under the watchful eyes of Lenin and Che.

Setting out on one of the only blustery days of the summer, with a crew of four, I was intrigued to find out if this 50-footer could really deliver the whole package. Within ten minutes of leaving the berth I was glued to the helm, blasting upwind with a grin on my face. When a company has 40 years of design experience, hybrid does not necessarily mean compromise.
2. My parents old sectional couch. It was too big for their living room when they moved so they left it behind for me (I’m currently renting their house from them). They bought it from Sears about 30 years ago and it’s been through several long distance moves and many a make-shift forts between my brother and I. I told my dad if he ever got rid of that couch without giving me dibs I’d disown him! I’ll replace some of the foam and recover it when I can afford too, but right now it’s just perfect as it is. We probably spend more hours on this couch that any other piece of furniture.
