Hosting any event in the spring means embracing the undeniable charm of pastel color palettes, alfresco settings, and overflowing florals. Put all of these elements together and you get a tablescape display that can only mean that warm weather is upon us. For all things in-bloom, we reached out to the experts on everything needed to construct a seasonal, spring tablescape that’s worthy of any celebration.
Another key detail to pay attention to when choosing pieces is their scale and shape. Keeping items in the same scale makes them look like they belong with each other and ensures that they will function together. If you have a sprawling, low-to-the-ground sectional and a tiny cocktail table, the difference in scale will make them look mismatched and may make them uncomfortable to use together. The overall shape of a piece can have a similar effect. If you have a contemporary sofa with a strong geometric look, a cocktail table with a shaped top and curved cabriole legs may look out of place, but a similarly geometric table would work well. For this room, we took a Transitional sofa, loveseat, and ottoman with a Traditional brown leather application and squared-off arms and paired them with geometric Modern/Contemporary tables, lamps with geometric bases and shades and an angular bookshelf.
To meet the demand for the crisp, bright kitchen so many crave nowadays, Holmes painted the kitchen cabinets white. He selected a massive slab of white marble defined by dramatic black veining. The designer had the idea to finish the countertops with a laminated white monolithic sculpture he compares to a carved bar of Ivory soap. It took some ingenuity to fabricate, but the job got done. To amplify the dichotomy of styles, Holmes incorporated an enormous and ultramodern domed light fixture he’d always wanted to use.

Kevin Kelley is an athletic-looking man in his mid-50s , with a piercing hazel gaze that radiates thoughtful intensity. In the morning, he often bikes two miles to Shook Kelley’s office in Hollywood — a rehabbed former film production studio on an unremarkable stretch of Melrose Avenue, nestled between Bogie’s Liquors and a driving school. Four nights a week, he visits a boxing gym to practice Muay Thai, a form of martial arts sometimes called “the art of eight limbs” for the way it combines fist, elbow, knee, and shin attacks. “Martial arts,” Kelley tells me, “are a framework for handling the unexpected.” That’s not so different from his main mission in life: He helps grocery stores develop frameworks for the unexpected, too.
Fort Worth’s Heim Barbecue is the originator of the pork belly burnt end, but when Panther City BBQ took over the lot where the Heim trailer once parked, they did their best imitation. It’s good, but more impressive is how they pair it with a jalape?o, which they cut in half, stuff with cheese, top with the pork belly, and wrap in bacon. There are plenty more smoked meats to love too. A brick-and-mortar on the site should be completed later this year. 201 E. Hattie, 214-532-3657. Open Thur–Sat 11–4, Sun noon–4.

The bar will serve a Cheerwine and whiskey slushie as well as a rotating slushie, such as frosé or a spiked Arnold Palmer. As for unfrozen cocktails, expect a Georgia mule with bourbon and peach bitters, a mezcal Paloma with smoked chilis, and a pickled peach smash with rum and mint. Beer will come not just in bottles, cans, and on draft, but in buckets—including ones filled with throwback options like Carling Black Label lager, Schlitz Tall Boys, Tona, and Genesee Cream Ale.
While the enormity of the world’s environmental challenges can feel overwhelming to the individual, citizen scientist Mia Monroe says residents of Larkspur, Corte Madera and other bayside communities in Marin County have a unique opportunity to help one species: the monarch butterfly.
Williams Sonoma is a temple for luxury household goods. Any time I walk in there I mostly stare wistfully at the crisp linens and gleaming appliances, without actually buying anything.
Traditional grocers are now expected to offer the same combination of convenience, flexibility, selection, and value. They’re understandably terrified by this scenario, which would require fundamental, complex, and very expensive changes. And Kelley is terrified of it, too, though for a different reason: He simply thinks it won’t work. In his view, supermarkets will never beat Walmart and Amazon at what they do best. If they try to succeed by that strategy alone, they’ll fail. That prospect keeps Kelley up at night?—?because it could mean a highly consolidated marketplace overseen by just a handful of players, one at stark contrast to the regional, highly varied food retail landscape America enjoyed throughout the 20th century.
An Instagram magnet since it opened in 2015, this elegant lounge sits seven stories above the Seaport. The indoor/outdoor space attracts a young, lively crowd with dazzling views of the downtown skyline, Fort Point Channel, and the harbor. The new Harbor Lounge section takes reservations; otherwise, it’s first come, first served. In winter, seating is in heated plastic “igloos.” Opens for the summer May 3.
