The Color Trends Designers Can’t Wait to See in 2023

With the New Year just around the corner and 2022 quickly drawing to a close, the design world is already preparing for the new and exciting trends that 2023 will bring. Brands like?Sherwin Williams,?Benjamin Moore,?Dunn-Edwards, and?Behr?have all announced their signature colors of the year for 2023, with Pantone expected to announce their choice in early December. And based on what we’ve seen so far, if 2022 was all about?calming green hues, 2023 is shaping up to be the year of warm, invigorating colors.

To get a better glimpse into what color trends we can expect to see in 2023, we spoke to seven design experts to get their take on what colors will be big in the new year. In general, the consensus is that we can expect to see lots of earthy tones, warm neutrals, pink hues, and more experimentation with rich, dark accents and pops of color. “I’m personally very excited about the predicted color trends for 2023,” says Sarabeth Asaff, Home Design Expert at?Fixr.com. “It seems like for many years now, people have started to embrace bolder colors, but backed off again. That does not seem to be the case for 2023…[it seems like] homeowners are finally ready to go big and bold with colors in their home.”

Here’s what these design experts had to say about the color trends they are most excited about in 2023.

Earth Tones

If the recently-announced?2023 Sherwin Williams color of the year?is any indication, warm earthy tones are here to stay in 2023. Compared to the earthy colors that were popular in the 1990s, these shades have a more boho and mid-century modern feeling, says interior designer?Carla Bast. Muted shades of terracotta, green, yellow, and plum will be popular choices for wall paint,?furniture, and home decor, predicts Bast. “These colors are warm and natural-looking and they provide a great contrast to the wood tones we have seen returning to cabinetry and furniture,” she adds.

Rich, Dark Colors

In 2022, we saw interior designers and homeowners get increasingly comfortable experimenting with bold, dark colors, and designers expect that trend to continue into the New Year. “It’s all about rich tones for 2023—chocolate brown, brick red, dark jade,” says Barbi Walters of?The Lynden Lane Co.

Asaff agrees: “Dark colors have a depth to them that you can’t get from a pastel or a neutral. So, they’re creating these really satisfying designs that are a treat for the eyes.” She predicts that colors like charcoal, peacock, and ochre will all have their moment in 2023.

Warm Neutrals

The consensus is that grey is out and warm neutrals will continue to dominate in 2023. “The color trends have gone from all white to warm neutrals, and in 2023 we will be warming up those neutrals even more,” says Brooke Moore, Interior Designer at?Freemodel.

Behr’s announcement of their 2023 color of the year, Blank Canvas, is further evidence that stark whites and greys will take a back seat to warmer whites and beiges in 2023. Regarding this warm neutral, Danielle McKim of?Tuft Interiors?tells us: “Creatives love a great canvas to work from. This warm white with creamy yellow undertones can lean into a neutral color palette and, just the same, be paired with bright, bold colors for a more vibrant space.”

Pink and Rose Hues

Las Vegas-based interior designer?Daniella Villamil?says that earthy and moody pinks is the color trend she’s most excited for in 2023. “Pink by nature is a color that promotes tranquility and healing, it is no wonder that homeowners are now more receptive than ever to this rosy hue,” she says. With paint companies like Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, and Dunn-Edwards all choosing a pink-infused hue as their color of the year (Raspberry Blush 2008-30,?Redend Point, and?Terra Rosa, respectively), it seems that 2023 is set to be quite the blushing year. Sarabeth Asaff agrees: “Rich mauves and dusty light pinks are the perfect way to add a glow to a room—and it’s flattering to everyone’s complexion just to be near them.” She also adds that these shades of pink are “elegant and sophisticated.”

Pastels

With the prediction that Pantone’s color of the year will be Digital Lavender, a light pastel purple, designers say the pastel trend will make its way to home decor. Jennifer Verruto, CEO and founder of San Diego-based design studio?Blythe Interiors?says that rich and inviting pastels like soft blues, clays, and greens will all be big in 2023.

Bast agrees, telling us she’s particularly excited about the return of pastels in the new year. “We’re already seeing hints of this trend in home decor magazines and online, and I think it’s going to be huge. Soft pink, mint green, and light purple will all be popular colors for walls, furniture, and accessories,” she says.
